She did it. She finally chewed her finger off. Yesterday after school, Zoey finally got home from school. Normally when the bus arrives she yells “it’s mommy!”. She has a window seat so always sees me before she gets off. Yesterday, however, she said “mommy, what happened?” I should have known then that something was wrong. Normally she is very excited to get home after school and get big hugs. It’s our daily routine. But yesterday she didn’t want to come around the corner where I could see her. She finally comes around the corner so I try to figure out what’s wrong. Clothes are fine. Both shoes are there. Backpack in place. Even the bows in her pigtails are in place. What’s wrong? Then I see it, she has chewed her finger off.

Zoey had done it. She had chewed her finger off! When we got her first prosthetic when she was one we were warned that the fingers could be chewed off. We were told that this was normally done by dogs thinking it was a chew toy. Since we didn’t have dogs we weren’t overly concerned. Of course we always watched out for her chewing on it. This time no one was watching. I mean I get it. How many times does someone need to think “I need to watch this child carefully because she might chew her finger off”. Never! Unless your child has a prosthetic.

So I had to send emails to her teachers making sure that nothing happened at school. (As a side note, I completely and utterly trust her teacher and aide. Zoey has been with them since she was 2 and loves them. They are amazing.) When she boarded the bus all finger were intact. I asked the bus driver, she hadn’t seen anything. I mean I knew what happened but needed to cover all bases.

UGH! She had chewed her finger off! So Nick and I set out last night to find some duct tape. The glove part of her hand, like the rest of it, comes from Germany so I can’t just replace it. And it has to be special ordered. So this isn’t an easy fix. Nick and I decided that it might look tacky but duct tape was our best option. And just in case anyone is wondering, you WILL get weird looks if you ask for “flesh colored” duct tape. And they didn’t have any. Nothing close. So I got washi tape and tried that. The tape last 14 seconds before she ripped it off. So I will be going to the store later looking again for flesh colored duct tape.

UPDATE*** I found flesh colored duct tape.  The repair is rough looking. I don’t think that it will last the entire day at school but we will try.

  1. Oh my!! I remember when her daddy posted about her arm falling off in a restaurant ! She has certainly kept y’all hopping!! Love me some Zoey!!!

    1. Hahaha… not surprisingly that story is on my list of things to write about. She and her brother definitely keep us on our toes.

    1. We did finally find some! Thankfully Michael’s had a roll. However, my duct tape job looks a little rough.

    2. We found some and it didn’t hold up. Were going to have to get another glove for her hand. Unfortunately, that will take a little while.
